The Migration Challenge: Innovations in Theory and Method

9th Annual Conference on Migration and Diversity

Keynote speaker for the WZB Annual Address on Migration and Diversity is Nina Glick Schiller (University of Manchester, UK | Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Germany).

Migration is one of the dominant social forces shaping politics and societies in the 21st century. Apart from its human and humanitarian implications, migration poses challenges to both research and policy. Unlike the stationary populations usually studied by social scientists, migrants have proven elusive to conventional research methods. Similarly, unlike policies targeted at domestic issues, migration policies have to be conceived transnationally from the start, and have to consider starkly opposing motivations and objectives.

This conference brings together scholars from economics, political science, sociology, and anthropology who look at migration and migration policies from a new angle, both from a theoretical and/or methodological point of view. We invite work that deals with all of the core issues surrounding contemporary migration.

We invite innovative empirical research leveraging qualitative and (quasi) experimental evidence, unique survey data, ethnographic studies or entirely new data sources, and welcome applications by scholars proposing new theoretical approaches. Research with a regional focus on Africa is particularly welcome, but not a requirement.

We invite applications from different disciplines (law, political science, sociology, social psychology, anthropology, history) and are open to investigations of all geographical foci, historical periods, and groups. We strongly encourage junior scholars to apply. Travel and accommodation expenses for accepted papers will be covered by the WZB according to the WZB travel regulations.

We invite paper proposals by both junior and senior scholars. Please submit an abstract (up to 400 words) and CV (up to 3 pages) as one PDF file to
