Simone Tholens, doctoral student at the European University Institute, Florence at the time, was a guest of the WZB research unit Transnational Conflicts and International Institutions (TKI) in April and May 2011. Her research focused on the question of why some programs for the disarmament of civilians have been more successful than others. The corresponding case studies dealt with the EU-led program in Cambodia and the UNDP program in Kosovo. She is currently a post doctoral researcher at the BORDERLANDS project at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute, where she is researching the diffusion of rules, norms, practices and institutions in EU relations vis-à-vis its Southern Neighborhood.
