Demographic change is a crucial issue both for families and for the future of societies as a whole. Within research and politics, however, the link between societal and family impact is often ignored. This leads to simplistic theories about intergenerational conflicts and unverified hypotheses about decreasing family solidarity in individualized societies. The aim of the research professorship is to better understand intergenerational relationships and solidarity in families within Europe and how they interact with institutional arrangements and intergenerational obligations determined by welfare policies.
