Oguz Alyanak - guest of the research group from February 2021 to June 2023. Oguz is a researcher in the Fairwork Project at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) at the University of Oxford and worked at the WZB on the working conditions of platform workers in Germany.
Guillem Amatller Dómine – guest of the research group in October and November 2022. Guillem's research focused on the impact of digitalization and automation on political attitudes and the moderating role of training interventions.
Ariella Silva Araujo – guest reseacher of the project group between February 2016 and January 2017 and PhD student at the University of Campinas (Brasil). During her stay at the WZB, she worked on her PhD project about German-Brasilian trade union networks focusing on the case of World Works Councils in automotive companies.
Fabio Ascione - guest of the research group from September 2022 bis January 2024. He received his PhD in economics from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne. His research focused on the global division of labor and its effects on wages, productivity and savings, as well as the unequal economic developments that result from this.
William Attwood-Charles – between April and June 2018 guest researcher at the WZB and at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society. William is a PhD student at the Boston College. During his stay in Berlin, he continued his research on working conditions and subjective perceptions of work in the platform economy. He specifically compared the developments in the United States and Germany.
Alessio Bertolini - guest of the research group from September 2021 to February 2022. Alessio completed his PhD in Social Policy at the University of Edinburgh on the topic of comparative labour market regulations for atypical workers in Italy and the UK. He is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Fairwork Project at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), University of Oxford.
Sebastian Botzem - guest of the research group between July 2017 and January 2021. Sebastian's research focused on transnational governance and standard setting processes. He is professor at the University of Bremen.
Kendra Briken – guest researcher of the project group between January and March 2014. Kendra received her doctorate from the University of Göttingen and worked as researcher, among others, at the Sociological Research Institute Göttingen, Goethe University Frankfurt, and University of Bremen. Her current research at the University of Strathclyde focuses on theoretical and empirical questions related to the social organization of work.
Juan Sebastian Carbonnell - guest of the research group from March to April 2023. Juan Sebastian is a researcher at École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay. During his stay at the WZB, he conducted research on the dynamics of automation in the automotive industry and its impact on labor.
Chris King-Chi Chan - guest of the research group in March 2022. Chris is associate professor at Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on the development of trade unions, collective bargaining and labor conflicts in China.
Tracy Corley – guest reseacher of the project group between July 2016 and June 2017 and PhD student at the Northeastern University Boston (USA). During her stay at the WZB, she worked on her PhD project about informality and illegal work in skillcrafts sectors in international comparison.
Robert Dorschel – guest researcher in the Research Group and at the Weizenbaum Institute from July to September 2020. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Sociology and member of Darwin College at the University of Cambridge. He studied sociology and political science at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. Since 2019 he is co-convener of the Cambridge Technology and New Media Research Cluster. Robert Dorschel conducts research in the fields of digital labour, culture and social theory. His dissertation focuses on the class of digital professionals. During his stay he worked especially on research related to 'digital labour'.
Mark Fliegauf - guest of the research group from April 2022 to January 2024. He is Executive Director at Think Productive WESA (West & South Asia). He works at the intersection of science and the public/economy, in particular on topics such as New Work.
María Pía Garavaglia - guest of the research group in May 2023. Maria Pia is a researcher at the CIPPEC Institute in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and member of the Fairwork Project network of the University of Oxford and the WZB. During her stay at the WZB, she conducted research on the working conditions of platform workers.
Emre Gömec - guest researcher in the research group from February 2020 to February 2021. He is a Ph.D. student in the University of Kassel, and a researcher in The Academic-Industry Research Network (TheAIRNET) in the U.S. He researches on financialization, corporate governance, and codetermination in ICT companies.
Mark Graham - guest reseacher of the research group between May and September 2019. Mark is Professor of Internet Geography at the Oxford Internet Institute and leads a range of research projects spanning topics between digital labour, the gig economy, internet geographies, and ICTs and development. His research at the WZB dealt with labour standards in the gig economy.
Kerry Holden – in January and February 2020 guest researcher at the WZB. Kerry is Lecturer in Human Geography at the Queen Mary University in London. Her research focuses on the genesis and the role of technology at work, in particular with regard to the professional identities of workers. During her stay in Berlin, she worked on a project about the emergence of Artifical Intelligence technologies in Africa.
Norbert Huchler - guest of the research group GAP and the Weizenbaum Institute research group "Working with artificial intelligence" in December 2022. He is member of the board of the Institute for Social Studies (ISF) in Munich. His research focuses on processes of technological change in the world of work. During his stay at WZB and Weizenbaum Institute, he presented his research on the development and implementation of artificial intelligence technologies in workplaces.
Gregory Jackson - guest of the research group between July 2017 and December 2020. Gregory's research focuses on the comparative analysis of corporate governance. He is professor of HRM at the Free University Berlin.
Hyung Je Jo – between August and October 2018 guest researcher at the WZB. Hyung Je Jo is professor at the department of sociology and social welfare at the University of Ulsan in South Korea. His research focuses on the development of production systems, human resource management and labor relations in the Korean automobile industry. During his stay at the WZB, he analyzed the human resource management approaches of Korean and German companies in Central Eastern Europe.
Sander Junte - guest of the research group from November 2023 to February 2024. He is a PhD student at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and his thesis focuses on how the introduction of “data-fueled technologies” is altering employment relations.
Ferda Karagöz Özenç – guest researcher of the project group between October 2014 and August 2015. She received her doctorate in economics from the Istanbul University where she continues to work. During her stay at the WZB she conducted reseach about industrial upgrading in the Turkish automotive industry.
Yaman Kouli – guest researcher of the project group between March 2013 and February 2014. He received his PhD in history from TU Chemnitz, where he investigated the meaning of knowledge for industrial production. As a recipient of the A.SK fellowship at WZB he collaborated with the project group “Globalization, Work, and Production” and focused on the topic “Knowledge as Infrastructure”.
Abigail Marks – guest researcher of the project group in November 2015 and April 2016. Abigail is professor of work and employment at the Heriot-Watt University School of Management. Her current research focuses on workplace and community identities, social class, the meaning of work and the ICT industry.
Vamberto Miranda Filho is a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Coimbra (Portugal). From September 2019 to September 2020 he was a guest researcher in the research unit Globalization, Work and Production and works in the project "Working in highly automated digital-hybrid processes" at Weizenbaum Institute.
Phoebe Moore, was a Research Fellow in Groups 1 and 18 at the Weizenbaum Institute in autumn 2018 and 2019 and a guest of the Research Group from January 2019 to June 2020. She is an Associate Professor of Political Economy and Technology at the University of Leicester School of Business. During her research in Berlin Dr Moore was investigating about the implications that the new advances of technologies at work have for human-machine relations and specific technological inventions and debates that reflect specific modes of production, as machines socialise other machines and socialise ourselves. AI advances also reflect the historical phase within which we view our capabilities as thinkers and producers, and reveal the power relations involved in the contemporary labour process.
Denis Neumann - guest of the research group from November 2022 to October 2023. Dennis is a PhD student at the University of Leeds. During his stay at WZB, he conducted research on labor conflicts on gig work platforms.
Yair Osheroff – between August 2017 and October 2018 guest researcher at the WZB. Yair is PhD student at the department of political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His major research interest is the political economy of occupational regulation and licensing. During his stay at the WZB, he focused on policies of occupational licensing in the European Union.
Sabine Pfeiffer – between September 2015 and June 2022 WZB Fellow and guest researcher of the research group. Sabine Pfeiffer is professor of sociology with a research focus on the relationship between technology, work and society at the Friedrich Alexander University Nürnberg-Erlangen. She cooperated with the research group in projects on the implementation of wearables and digital assistance systems in work processes and in the development of the DFG Priority Program "Digitalization of Working Worlds".
Saumya Premchander - guest of the research group from April 2022 to March 2024. She was a research fellow at the University of Bayreuth.
Gale Raj-Reichert – guest researcher of the project group from January to December 2016. She received her PhD from the University of Manchester for her research on governance in global production networks. She continued this line of research with a project on global production networks in the electronics industry funded by the British Academy. Her research at the WZB dealt with the relationship between free trade agreements and the global governance of labor standards.
David Rejeski – guest of the research group from February to December 2022. During his stay at the WZB, David was engaged in the creation of a research network on digitalization and sustainability.
Sidney Rothstein – in 2018 and 2021 guest researcher at the WZB and at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society. Sidney received his doctorate from the University of Pennsilvania for a study about organizing and labor disputes in the IT sector. During his stay in Berlin, he conducted a research project about IT multinationals. Sindey is assistant professor of political science at Williams College.
Stefan Schmalz – in December 2019 guest researcher at the WZB. Stefan received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Marburg and concluded his habilitation at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena where he is affiliated to the Chair of Labor, Industrial and Economic Sociology. During his stay in Berlin, he was working on a project about Chinese foreign direct investment in Europe and the political discussions about its regulation and control.
Padmini Sharma – guest of the research group from September 2022 to January 2023. During her stay at the WZB she worked on her PhD project on gig workers in Italy and India.
Patrick Thomas Sheehan - guest of the research group in October and November 2021. Patrick is a PhD student at the University of Texas. His research at the WZB focused on tech startups in Germany.
Robert Sinopoli - guest of the research group between 2017 and 2021. Robert Sinopoli was research follow at the University of Osnabrück and worked on the change of teamwork concepts in the German automobile industry.
Philipp Staab – guest researcher of the project group between March and April 2018. Philipp received his doctorate from the University of Kassel and worked as a researcher at the Sociological Research Institute Hamburg. As a research fellow at the University of Kassel and a Permanent Fellow at the Institute for the History and Future of Work (IGZA) in Berlin, he is studying the development of the digital capitalism.
Karolina Stegemann – guest researcher of the project group in December 2013. She received her PhD from the Lüneburg University for her work on changes in labor law in Poland. Her subsequent researchfocused on employment relations in Eastern Europe. She currently works as coordinator and researcher at the Volkswagen AutoUni in Wolfsburg.
Isabella Stingl - guest of the research group from February 2022 to April 2024. Her postdoctoral project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, focused on platform work and migration.
Paul Thompson - guest of the research group in November 2022. He is professor of employment studies at Stirling University. During his stay at the WZB, he presented his ongoing research project on the historical development of labor process theory (LPT) paradigm.
Doğu Toksöz - guest of the research group from March 2017 to January 2024. He worked on his dissertation about managerial discourses on the Generation Y.
Vera Trappmann – guest of the research group between April and September 2022. She is professor of comparative employment relations at Leeds University. During her stay at the WZB, she conducted research on labor conflicts in the platform economy and the Leeds Index of Platform Labour Protest.
Luis Vargas Montoya - guest researcher in the resarch group from January to March 2020. Luis Vargas is a Costa Rican researcher and PhD candidate at the University of Zaragoza-Spain. His research focuses on the relationship between digital divide and other socioeconomic gaps. He is a former employee of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Telecommunications of the Government of Costa Rica.
Matt Vidal – in September and October 2019 guest researcher at the WZB and at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society. Matt received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is Reader in Sociology and Comparative Political Economy at the Institute for International Management of the Loughborough University. During his stay in Berlin, he continued his research on lean production management systems and the change dynamics brought about by technological change and digitalization.
Dinesh Wadiwel – guest researcher of the project group in September 2015. He is a lecturer at the University of Sydney, where he heads the Master of Human Rights studies. He conducts research on political theory with a special focus on the matters of human and animal rights. At the WZB, he has done research on the impact of the fragmentation of global value chains in the food industry on the situation of the animals and in particular on the transport of living animals.
Llewellyn Williams-Brooks – between November 2018 and February 2019 guest researcher at the WZB. Llewellyn is PhD student at the University of Sydney. His research utilises the labour geography of global cities to understand intra-regional inequality. More specifically, his research focuses on Greater Western Sydney, and its regions of deindustrialization.
Mascha Will-Zocholl - guest of the research group between April and December 2022. Mascha is professor of sociology of the digitalization of work and organization at the Hessian University of Public Management and Security (HöMS). During her stay at the WZB, she analyzed to what extent the consequences of the Corona pandemic differ between the private sector and public administration in terms of the extent and speed of digitalization and automation processes.
Alexander Ziegler - guest of the research group "Working in highly automated digital-hybrid processes" at the Weizenbaum Institute in November and December 2021. He received his PhD from the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. In his thesis he investigated the strategy formation of industrial companies in the context of the rise of the Internet of Things. During his stay at the WZB, he examined how tech companies like Google and Amazon develop and operate the Internet applications on which their global online platforms are based.
